How to cut up a t-shirt to make a tank top
Follow these steps to cut up a T-shirt and make a tank top:
Lay your T-shirt flat on the floor. Cut out the collar, using the front outline as your guide, cutting through both sides of the shirt. You may need to cut out more later to get your desired depth. Next, cut off one sleeve. Start by cutting straight down for several inches, then curve outwards. Don't start curving immediately. Flip the cut-off sleeve and place it on the remaining sleeve. Cut along this line when you cut off the second sleeve so they are symmetrical.
Now, cut off the bottom of the shirt just above the hem. Cut off the stitching and discard it so that you have a loop of T-shirt material with no extra threads. Take the loop and snip it so it's no longer a loop, then stretch it out. Flip the shirt over and cut a deep "V", discarding the fabric. Snip two tiny holes, one on each side of the point of the "V" – this will keep the string secure in the laundry. Take the stretched-out loop and thread it through the holes. Pull it almost all the way through, leaving a couple of inches on one side, then tie a double knot.
Cut two more tiny holes about 4-5 inches from the top of the shirt, towards the outer edge. Start at the bottom where you knotted the string, gather the back together, wrap once, then loop the string through itself and pull tight. Continue looping and pulling tight until you work your way up to the holes at the top. When you get to the top, thread the string through both holes again and tie a secure knot. Leave about 2 inches after you tie the knot (in case it comes undone) and cut off the extra. Thread the rest of the string down through the loops to secure it.
Now it's time to fine-tune. Try on your new tank top and make a note of the width of the straps and the neckline. Then take it off and cut some more if you want the neckline to be lower or the straps to be thinner. You can also cut more off the bottom if you want it to be shorter.

The best workout tank tops for women
Working out? You need the right gear. A good tank top can offer you freedom of movement and keep you cool and comfortable. Here are some of the best workout tank tops for women.
Free People Movement Free Throw Muscle Tank
This tank is our best overall workout tank top. It's super flattering, never rides up, and is compressive, supportive, and sweat-wicking. It's also rare for a spandex tank to not move around during a workout, and this one stays put. It's also moisture-wicking, so you don't have to worry about sweat stains. It does offer some compression and hold, but for high-impact activity, you may want to wear an extra bra underneath for more support.
Rhone Revive Longline Bra
This tank has built-in odour-resistant technology and UPF50 for sun protection. It also has tons of built-in support with an interior bra and cups to keep you held in during workouts. We recommend sizing down in this tank for a bit more support.
Alo Yoga Cover Tank
This tank is perfect for layering. Throw it over your sports bra or wear it with jeans or leggings. It's not moisture-wicking, so it's not ideal for sweaty workouts, but it's super soft and flowy. We do wish it came in more colours, though.
Lululemon Sculpt Cropped Tank Top
If you're building up a sweat, you need a tank that will keep you cool and breezy. Lululemon's Sculpt Cropped Tank Top has mesh fabric panels for breathability and ventilation, and it's moisture-wicking and quick-drying. It's also slightly cropped and nice and flowy. We recommend sizing up for a baggier, more breathable fit.
Gymshark
Gymshark has a huge variety of tank tops to suit different styles and workouts. Their Vital collection is a staple for every workout wardrobe, while their Power and Legacy collections are designed for those who love to lift. Their Elevate collection uses soft and stretchy fabric that's perfect for yoga, and their Sweat collection uses breathable materials and durable designs to take you through intense workouts.
Beyond Yoga Featherweight Your Fit Shirred Tank
This tank was tested by a fashion contributor during a yoga class, and it's been given the seal of approval. It has rouching on the sides, which makes it look effortless and hip-hugging, and the fabric is buttery smooth. However, it is a bit see-through, so we recommend opting for a darker colour.
There you have it! Now you can hit the gym in style and comfort.

How to choose a tank top for the gym
When choosing a tank top for the gym, there are several factors to consider to ensure you feel comfortable and confident during your workout. Here are some tips to help you select the perfect gym tank top:
Fabric and Functionality:
- Opt for breathable, sweat-wicking fabrics such as nylon, polyester, or a blend of these materials. These fabrics will keep you dry and comfortable during your workout by absorbing and evaporating sweat quickly.
- Consider the type of workout you'll be doing. For yoga or pilates, you might prefer a softer, more flowy fabric that offers a full range of motion. For running or HIIT workouts, choose a tank with more compression and support to minimize chafing and keep the fabric in place.
- If you plan to wear only a tank top without a sports bra underneath, look for tanks with built-in bras that provide the necessary support for your cup size and level of activity.
Fit and Style:
- Choose a tank that fits your body well and allows for a full range of motion. Avoid tanks that are too tight and restrictive or too loose and baggy, as these can be distracting and uncomfortable during your workout.
- Consider the neckline and armholes. For a more modest look, opt for a higher neckline and smaller armholes. If you prefer a tank that shows off your shoulders and arms, go for a lower neckline and larger armholes.
- Select a style that flatters your body type. Try on different cuts and styles, such as racerback, scoop neck, or muscle tank, to see which one makes you feel the most confident.
- Don't forget about the length. For activities like yoga or stretching, a longer tank that hits at the hip can provide more coverage when you're bending forward. For running or high-intensity workouts, a cropped tank can offer more breathability and freedom of movement.
Color and Design:
- Choose a color that you love and that makes you feel confident. If you tend to sweat a lot, opt for darker colors or fun patterns that can help disguise sweat stains.
- Consider the design and details of the tank. Do you prefer a simple, solid-colored tank or one with fun graphics or cut-out details? You can also mix and match your tank with coordinating leggings or shorts for a stylish gym outfit.
Personal Preferences:
- Think about any additional features that are important to you, such as odor-resistant technology, UPF protection for outdoor workouts, or a longer length that you can tuck into your leggings.
- If you're environmentally conscious, look for tanks made from recycled materials or those produced by sustainable or ethical brands.
- Finally, consider the price and your budget. Gym tank tops can vary widely in price, so determine how much you're willing to spend and compare prices from different brands.
Remember, the most important thing is to choose a tank top that makes you feel comfortable, confident, and ready to crush your workout!
