Designing a T-shirt with a Cricut machine is a fun and easy project, especially for beginners. Cricut machines are electronic cutting machines that can cut designs, which can then be ironed onto a T-shirt. The machine is versatile and can cut a variety of materials, including iron-on vinyl, heat transfer vinyl, and adhesive vinyl.
The first step is to design the T-shirt in Cricut Design Space, where you can either create your own design or choose from pre-made templates. Once the design is finalised, it needs to be cut from the chosen material using the Cricut machine. The machine will cut the design with precision, ensuring clean edges. After cutting, the excess material needs to be removed, or weeded, leaving only the desired design.
The final step is to apply the design to the T-shirt. This is done by placing the design on the T-shirt and using a heat source, such as an iron or a Cricut EasyPress, to transfer the design onto the fabric. The EasyPress is a recommended tool as it provides precise temperature and timing settings, ensuring the design adheres correctly.

What You'll Learn
Choosing a pre-made design in Cricut Design Space
When designing a T-shirt in Cricut Design Space, you have the option to choose a pre-made design. You can find a variety of pre-made designs for iron-on T-shirts in Design Space, available with a Cricut Access membership. To access these, click on 'Projects' in the left-hand sidebar, enter the search term "shirt" in the search bar, and browse the results for ideas.
If you're a beginner, it's recommended to start with a simple, one-colour design. Look for simple shapes and large letters that will be easy to weed. For example, you could use a block text such as Arial Bold, or a script font such as Best Dreams.
Once you've chosen your pre-made design, you can use a template in Cricut Design Space to visualise the iron-on design on a shirt before you cut it. First, click on 'Templates' in the top left corner, then choose 'Classic T-Shirt' and use the drop-down menus to select a style, size, and colour. With the template in the background, you can resize your design so it fits on your T-shirt.
You can use the resize handle to change the size of the design. Select the image, and you'll see the resize handle appear in the lower right corner. Click and drag the handle to make the design larger or smaller. You can also type specific measurements into the Size boxes in the toolbar.
Remember, there are no hard and fast rules when it comes to the placement and size of your design—feel free to get creative and experiment with different looks!

Applying iron-on vinyl to a t-shirt
Now it's time to apply the iron-on to the t-shirt with a heat press. Follow the step-by-step instructions in the Cricut Heat Guide. The heat guide will show you the temperature the Cricut EasyPress needs to be, as well as how long to press for the best results.
Firstly, pre-wash your shirt before applying the vinyl. This way, if the shirt shrinks, the vinyl won't buckle or crack. Prewashing the shirt also removes any dirt or oils that could interfere with the vinyl adhesive.
Next, lay your pre-washed shirt out flat on a clean EasyPress mat. Use the EasyPress to preheat the shirt for 5 seconds. This will also smooth out any wrinkles that may be on the shirt.
Now, centre the vinyl design on the shirt. A tip to find the centre of your shirt is to fold it in half and lightly press the folded edge to make a crease. When you unfold the shirt, the crease will mark the centre line. You can also use this method to find the centre of the vinyl design.
Place the vinyl design on the shirt with the shiny side up. This means that the plastic carrier sheet is up, and the dull vinyl side is touching the shirt fabric.
Next, apply heat to the vinyl design as instructed by the Cricut Heat Transfer Guide. For a cotton shirt, use light pressure at 315°F for 30 seconds.
Then, flip the shirt over and apply heat to the back of the design as instructed by the Cricut Heat Transfer Guide. For a cotton shirt, use light pressure at 315°F for 15 seconds.
Let the shirt cool to the touch, and carefully peel off the plastic transfer sheet.
Finally, wait 24 hours after applying your vinyl before washing the shirt. Turn your shirt inside out before washing without bleach. This design should last at least 50 washes.

ANY! The Cricut Explore family, Cricut Joy, and the Cricut Maker all cut iron-on vinyl or HTV for shirts the same way.
You will need iron-on vinyl or heat transfer vinyl (or HTV). HTV is the same as iron-on vinyl, just a different brand name. Popular HTV brands include Siser Easyweed and Fame Crafts HTV.
Besides a Cricut and iron-on vinyl, you will need weeding tools, a light grip Cricut mat (or older standard mat that’s less sticky), a heat source (EasyPress, heat press, or household iron), and something under the heat source like an EasyPress mat or towel.
Open Cricut Design Space and click on "New Project". Click on the text button on the left side and type a word in the box that pops up. Repeat this step for any additional text you want to add.
