Creating Custom Rubber Prints For T-Shirts

Creating a rubber print on a T-shirt can be achieved through various methods such as rubber stamping, screen printing, and heat transfer. Rubber stamping involves crafting a custom stamp and applying ink or paint to the T-shirt, while screen printing utilizes a mesh screen and squeegee to transfer the design. Heat transfer, as the name suggests, employs heat to apply a rubber design to the fabric. Each method has its advantages and disadvantages, and the chosen technique depends on factors like cost, equipment availability, and desired outcome. Choosing the right materials

When it comes to choosing the right materials for rubber printing on a T-shirt, there are several key considerations to keep in mind. Firstly, decide on the type of rubber you want to use. A popular option is to use a red rubber packing sheet, which can be easily sourced from hardware stores. These sheets come in 6x6" squares and are typically used for plumbing gaskets. They offer two thickness options: 1/16" and 1/8". Selecting the appropriate thickness depends on the desired outcome and the complexity of your design.

The next important material is the backing for your stamp. You can use plexiglass, wood, or any other sturdy material that is slightly bigger than your design. This will serve as the base of your stamp. Additionally, you will need a handle for your stamp. A small dowel or a similar material can be attached to the backing to provide a comfortable grip when applying pressure during the stamping process.

For the ink or paint, it is crucial to choose a water-based option. Craft acrylic paint is an affordable and effective choice, available at most craft stores. Ensure that the paint or ink you select is suitable for use on fabrics and compatible with the type of rubber you are using. It is also recommended to have a paintbrush for applying the paint or ink to your stamp.

Lastly, you will need tools for assembling your stamp. A hot glue gun is essential for attaching the rubber design to the backing and the handle. Scissors will be useful for cutting out your design from the rubber sheet, and a sharpie marker will help you trace and cut your design accurately.

Making the stamp

Begin by deciding on the design you want to stamp onto your t-shirt. In this example, the author chose a yin-yang symbol. Draw your design on the computer to ensure symmetry, then print it out and cut it out to create a tracer. If you don't have access to a printer, you can also draw your design by hand and cut it out. Place the tracer on your rubber sheet and trace the design with a sharpie. Cut out the design using scissors or a razor blade, depending on its complexity. For more intricate designs, a razor blade will provide more precision.

For the next step, you will create a backing for your stamp. Cut out a piece of plexiglass or similar material that is slightly larger than your design. Using a hot glue gun, carefully glue the rubber design onto the plexiglass. Be sure to apply enough glue to ensure a secure hold. Next, glue a small piece of the dowel to the plexiglass on the side opposite the rubber design; this will serve as the handle for your stamp.

Now that your stamp is ready, it's time to apply paint or ink. Choose a water-based paint or ink that is suitable for fabric, such as "crafter's acrylic". Liberally apply the paint to the stamp, covering all areas that you want to be coloured. It's a good idea to place some newspaper inside your t-shirt to prevent any accidental paint transfer to the back of the shirt. Position your stamp firmly and evenly on the desired area of the t-shirt and press down. Slowly lift the stamp to reveal the design. You may need to apply pressure multiple times to achieve a clear image. If necessary, touch up any areas with a paintbrush using small, up-and-down stippling motions.

With your design now stamped onto the t-shirt, allow it to dry thoroughly. To help remove the "newly-printed" look, you can soak the shirt in water for a few hours, then iron over the paint and wash it a few times. Remember to wash the shirt inside out in cold water to prolong the life of your design. Over time, most t-shirt prints will naturally fade or flake, so don't be concerned if this occurs.

Applying the design

Now that you have your stamp ready, it's time to start the fun part: stamping the shirt! Place your t-shirt on a smooth, flat surface, and if you're concerned about any paint getting on the back of the shirt, put some newspaper inside the shirt. Get your paintbrush and paints, and apply paint liberally to the stamp in the areas where you want the colour to be. Position the stamp on your t-shirt and press down firmly. Lift the stamp up slowly and see what the design looks like. You may need to press down a few times to get a nice clear image, but if you want a more worn-out look, feel free to leave it half-printed. If there are any areas that need touching up, use a paintbrush to apply more paint, using short up-and-down strokes to fill in the gaps. If you're using multiple colours, remember to rinse your stamp and brush before applying a new colour.

Once you're happy with how your design looks, let it dry thoroughly. To make the design less stiff, you can soak the shirt in water for a few hours. Then, iron over the paint and wash the shirt a few times to get rid of that 'newly-printed' look. When washing, use cold water and turn the shirt inside out if you're worried about the design coming off. Remember that most t-shirts lose their printing slowly, so don't be alarmed if your design begins to fade or flake.

Stamping the shirt

Now for the fun part: stamping the shirt!

First, get your shirt, paintbrush, paints, and stamp. Spread your T-shirt out on a smooth, flat surface. It's a good idea to put some newspaper inside the shirt to prevent any paint from accidentally getting on the back of the shirt.

Apply paint liberally to the stamp in the areas where you want the colour to be. For my yin-yang design, I painted one half black, and one small circle of the yin-yang. Position your stamp and press it firmly onto the shirt. Lift it up slowly and see what the design looks like. Multiple presses are often required to get a nice clear image, but feel free to leave it half-printed for a worn-out look. If needed, touch up some areas with your paintbrush by applying paint to the brush and using short, up-and-down strokes to fill in any gaps.

If you are using multiple colours, rinse off your stamp and brush, then apply and stamp your next colour. For my design, this was the white side of the yin-yang.

Once you're satisfied with how your design looks, let it dry thoroughly. I find that soaking the shirt for a few hours in water helps to make the design less stiff. Then, iron over the paint and wash the shirt a few times to get the 'newly-printed' look out of it. Wash it cold, and inside out if you're concerned about preserving the design. Most T-shirts lose their printing slowly, so don't be alarmed if yours begins to fade or flake slightly.

Finishing touches

Once you have stamped your design onto the T-shirt, you will need to let it dry thoroughly. You can then iron over the paint to help it set, and wash the T-shirt a few times to remove any stiffness. Remember to wash the T-shirt inside out, in cold water, to protect your design. Most T-shirts will lose their printing over time, so don't be alarmed if your design begins to fade or flake.

If you want to add a raised effect to your rubber print, you could try using puff vinyl with an overlay of heat press vinyl. You can also achieve a 3D effect with HD printing, using HD inks.

If you want to remove the rubber print from your T-shirt, you can do so by using a combination of heat and rubbing alcohol, or acetone. Place a cloth over the rubber print and apply heat with an iron on a low setting. Then, gently rub the area with a cloth soaked in either rubbing alcohol or acetone. Keep going until the print comes off. Wash the T-shirt as usual to remove any remaining traces.
