As the cold season approaches, many people in the DC area are in need of a warm coat. You can help by donating a new or gently worn winter coat to local donation centres and charities. Many organisations in DC are accepting donations of men's, women's, and children's winter coats, including Central Union Mission, Thrive DC, Catholic Charities, and Martha's Table. You can also participate in coat drives, such as the Share the Warmth Coat Drive benefiting the Salvation Army National Capital Area Command, or organise your own coat drive in your community.

Central Union Mission

The Central Union Mission operates an emergency shelter for homeless men, a rehabilitation program for men with life-controlling issues, a free meals program, a distribution centre for clothes and furniture, and a 220-acre retreat centre with a camp for underprivileged children. They also provide safe shelter, hot meals, medical care, job training, and compassionate care to transform the lives of those in need in the Washington D.C. area.

Catholic Charities

Each winter, Catholic Charities collects and distributes over 1,000 winter coats to those in need of warmth. The Archdiocese of Washington's Catholic Charities hosts an annual Coats of Many Colors Coat Drive, which is made possible by donations from parishes, schools, community groups, and individuals.

Hundreds of coats are given away at the Coat Closet, where each individual is allowed to take two coats. Catholic Charities also hosts other events, such as the Catholic Charities Gala and the Legal Network Golf Tournament, to raise funds for their initiatives.

You can support Catholic Charities' coat drive by donating gently worn or new coats. Monetary donations are also accepted, with every $1 donated providing warmth for one person. You can also organize a coat drive in your local community or engage with corporate and foundation supporters to maximize your impact.

Martha's Table

Martha's Outfitters is a no-cost boutique that provides clothing for children and families, including winter coats, scarves, hats, and gloves. The program ensures that families, especially those with young children, have access to necessary clothing items without incurring any costs.

Donations of winter coats and other clothing can be made at two locations in Washington, DC: Martha's Table at The Commons and Martha's Table at The Maycroft. The Commons location is open for donations from Monday to Friday, 11:00 AM to 4:00 PM, while the Maycroft location is open from Monday to Friday, 11:00 AM to 3:00 PM. Both locations have specific instructions for dropping off donations, which are outlined on the Martha's Table website.

It is important to note that Martha's Table only accepts clean and wearable clothing donations that are free of stains, smells, tears, and holes. The organisation also requests that donated items be neatly folded and placed in sturdy boxes or bags.

In addition to clothing donations, Martha's Table also accepts monetary donations and gift cards, which can be made through their website or by contacting the organisation directly. These donations allow Martha's Table to provide other essential resources, such as healthy meals and early childhood education, to families in need.

Building Bridges/WC Smith

As the cold season approaches, many people in the DC area, especially children, need a warm coat to protect them from the cold. One way to help is to donate to the WC Smith/Building Bridges Across the River coat drive, which collects cold-weather outerwear for children.

The coat drive is specifically for the children of Villages of Parklands residents, and the coats will be distributed during the WCS/Building Bridges Holiday Bazaar on December 11. Coats for older children are particularly needed.

You can purchase a coat from the registry that has been created at Target, or you can contribute a coat from the vendor of your choice. Coats should be delivered by December 6.

If you have coats that are too worn to donate, One Warm Coat has teamed up with Retold Recycling, which will take coats with holes or stains and ensure they don't end up in a landfill.

• Thrive DC (1525 Newton St NW) – accepting gently used winter coats, hoodies, gloves, hats, scarves, blankets, and sleeping bags, as well as new underwear, thermals, and socks. Items can be dropped off between 8 a.m. and 6 p.m.
• Catholic Charities (2811 O Street, SE) – accepting new and gently used, cleaned coats, especially larger sizes.
• Martha’s Table (2114 14th Street NW) – collecting winter clothing and cold-weather gear, including hats and scarves.
